Essential collectible recordings and films for those looking to learn more about the band Led Zeppelin.

As the premier hard rock and touring band of the 1970s, Led Zeppelin is widely regarded as one of the greatest rock bands of all-time. The surviving members of the band have also received some recent media attention for agreeing to play a rare one-time only concert in London’s 02 arena on November 26th, 2007. While some may scorn the band for the decadence, none can deny their influence on other artists, and also their ability to maintain popularity over the years. Those looking to discover the music of Led Zeppelin can start here.

Zeppelin Best Albums

No fan of hard rock should be without the fourth studio recording of the band - the album of many titles - here conveniently referred to as Led Zeppelin IV. This album is also known as Zoso and Four symbols. This masterwork contains the band’s most famous song, “Stairway to Heaven,” and also popular tracks such as “Black Dog,” “Rock and Roll,” and “Going to California.”

Most hard rock enthusiasts would want the first 6 Zeppelin albums in their catalog, but a good starting point would be the fourth album and Led Zeppelin II, a good mix of popular songs featuring Zeppelin in their prime.

Song Remains the Same DVD

Although the Zeppelin concert DVD The Song Remains the Same came first, the real Zeppelin viewing experience is the eponymous DVD. Featuring over 5 hours of concert footage, Led Zeppelin tracks the band throughout their career, spanning from 1969 through 1979. Also, The Song Remains the Same splices in some questionable and strange footage of the band, taking away from the most integral element of watching a concert DVD: close-ups of the band playing.

Hammer of the Gods

Although Richard Cole’s Stairway to Heaven: Led Zeppelin Uncensored is more of an insider’s peak into the band, Stephen Davis’ Hammer of the Gods is the quintessential examination of the band’s prominence, and their decadence. Fans do not want to miss this.

Essential Led Websites

Led Zeppelin's official site is good about keeping up with the band members, and it also includes essential information, such as discography, lyrics, and merchandise. Those looking to dig deeper will want to check out Achilles’ Last Stand, which has up to date news on the band, tablature for guitar enthusiasts, and plenty of links to other Zep sites. Also worth perusing is Led Zeppelin Live, a nice collection of information on bootlegs, press releases, interviews, etc.

If you’re just discovering Zeppelin, one of the best rock bands of all time, congratulations on beginning your journey through a prolific and impressive body of work.
